Streamy Awards: Community Feedback

The 2009 Streamy Awards blew away expectations. Web series fans, content creators, distributors, and studios submitted over 100,000 entries for consideration. The Wadsworth Theater in Los Angeles was packed for an awards ceremony filled with both mainstream and internet stars and personalities. And, most importantly, the Streamy Awards drew attention to the online entertainment industry and exposed some of its top programming to future fans of the medium.
But, there’s always room for improvement. In their ongoing effort to honor excellence in web television, the Streamy Awards are constantly soliciting and listening to feedback from the web television community. We’re always looking for new ways to shine a light on top-quality, online programming. And that’s exactly how the award for Best Companion Web Series was born.
At last year’s Streamys, Battlestar Galactica: Face of the Enemy took home top awards in many of the Dramatic categories. The web series is, of course, derivative of the popular Syfy television program, Battlestar Galactica. It features many of the same cast members, was produced by much of the same crew, and takes place in the same BSG world. Face of the Enemy is by all means an award-winning web series deserving of praise, but the community pointed out that it’s a different kind of award-winning web series deserving of praise.
After the 2009 Streamy Awards, there was a general consensus within the community that online extensions of television programs — which have storylines and fans already in place — should not compete against programming produced originally for the web. Now, because of great suggestions and feedback from the community, we have an award for Best Companion Series, so that web original don’t get mixed up with online programs derived from TV.
That’s just one great example of how the community helps to shape the Streamy Awards. Unfortunately, because the Awards are an annual event, changes can’t be implemented with the immediacy that we’ve come to expect from the web. Even slight adjustments or amendments — especially when it concerns things like categories and Streamys Guidlines and Eligibility — often must wait until the following year so they can be clearly stated before the submissions period begins.
But don’t let that stop you from voicing your opinion! if you have any suggestions about how to improve the Streamy Awards, please let us know! The Streamys are always looking for ways to shine the brightest light possible on all the excellent entertainment in web television — and we need your help.
Have you submitted you series for Streamys consideration? The deadline closes tonight at 11:59pm PST. Submit your entry now!

Great idea on the Best Companion Web Series. I was watching the show last year and thought it seemed a little “uneven” for all these indie producers to compete against network shows. Thanks for listening to the community and keep up the great work
I’m in agreement and was one of the supporters for differentiation between original content created for the web versus content spun off from mainstream television. It’s good to see the Academy is keeping their minds open. One thing that might be worth taking into consideration for the future is the inclusion of a Best Supporting category. For a lot of ensemble shows, there are numerous possibilities for actor nominations and the fans are left dividing their votes. Best Supporting categories would allow for a greater acknowledgment of the talent involved in digital media productions. Just my two cents!

I have to agree with Mark on it being uneven. Glad to know that Streamys are looking for feedback from everyone. Thanks everyone!
Thank you very much for a kind of supreme things just about this good post ! You have to found your own buy dissertation service, we opine. Because some thesis writing services make things like that and you could perform very thesis topics also.
Love the idea of a Companion category – it’ll definitely help web originals like our show not get swallowed by larger productions.
When are they going to announce the nominees? THe oscars and other major award shows have the nominees posted about a month or two ahead of time. Where’s the nominees?
[...] it feels like there are more stronger, new shows out there than last year and the organizers have listened closely to our complaints. Maybe I’m wrong (and if so, remind me in the comments). But to me, it feels like it’s [...]
Please nominate some/any underground web series. I understand the money is in the big names and big web budgets, but there are some great low-budget unsigned series happening with no known principal talent.
All in all, Streamy’s is an awesome event.. thanks for putting it on!
I love the web series movement!!
